How often should you wash your sheets?
Washing sheets takes time, space, and can be a hassle! Yet, it is something that must be done. RKF Home explains in this guide why it is so important to wash your bedding, how often to do it, and offers some washing tips for our percale and cotton satin bed linens.
Why is it important to wash your sheets?
To kill bacteria
Over time, sheets accumulate bacteria from sweat, dead skin cells, and body oils. These microorganisms can not only cause unpleasant odors but can also lead to skin issues and illnesses. Regularly washing your sheets helps eliminate these bacteria, ensuring a cleaner and healthier sleeping environment.
For Enhanced Comfort
There's nothing quite like slipping into fresh, clean sheets. That crisp sensation greatly enhances the overall comfort of your bed, improving the quality of your sleep. Clean sheets are also softer to the touch, adding an extra layer of luxury and well-being to your bedtime routine.
To Reduce Allergy Risks
Sheets can become a haven for dust mites, pet hair, pollen, and other allergens that accumulate over time. These allergens can trigger unpleasant symptoms for people with allergies or asthma, such as sneezing, itching, or difficulty breathing. Washing your sheets regularly helps minimize the presence of these allergens, creating a healthier and more disturbance-free sleeping environment.
How Often Should You Wash Them?
For adults, most studies on the topic recommend washing or changing your sheets every 1 to 2 weeks. This frequency depends on several factors, including how you sleep, your health, and your habits.
For instance, if you’re sensitive to allergies, sweat a lot, or occasionally have a pet join you in bed, it’s advisable to wash your sheets as often as possible—ideally once a week.
On the other hand, if you shower before bed, wear pajamas, and use suitable bedding (such as cotton percale sheets that help regulate temperature), you can wait a little longer before washing them.
As for young children, who can spend up to 12 hours a day in bed, their bedding should be washed more regularly. Most experts agree that washing their sheets once a week is sufficient.
How to Wash RKF Home Bedding?
We recommend washing most of our bedding items in the machine at 60°C. However, for certain items, we suggest washing at a lower temperature (40°C). If you’re unsure, please refer to the care instructions for each specific collection. It has been proven that even at lower temperatures, the mechanical action of washing helps eliminate dust mites and their allergens.
For drying, you can use a tumble dryer at a temperature not exceeding 70°C. For ironing, use a steam iron at a maximum temperature of 150°C.
